I would recommend two discs of opal acrylic with a bunch of WS2812 LEDs behind them. Then programmatically group them into two sections, and write different values to the LEDs in each section.

I might also use really thick opal acrylic to reduce the maximum possible amount of light that reaches the subject (those LEDs are bright!) but also to diffuse the light as evenly as possible.

Furthermore I'd run it with an Arduino (or possibly a Pi Pico) so that I could have a single usb cable to the goggles.
