Thank you for the ideas! Not sure what you meant by "sensible version" ... Ha. I installed the most recent version, which seemed sensible to me at the time. It's my first go with the Rpi. Omxplayer is not available for install on Bookworm though.Also, omxplayer is available provided you are using a sensible version of RaspberryPi OS.
Seriously, if there is no critical reason why you have to be running the latest version, and assuming this is a "single use" installation, going back to, say, Buster, might be worth trying.
However, I did take your suggestion and installed Buster where omxplayer does work. This solved my problem. Thank you. Doesn't seem like going backwards is the best solution. But I believe I tried every possible way to do this on the current version (Bookworm) with no success. VCL doesn't like working at startup, and MPG123 won't work at the root level. Using an OS where omxplayer was baked in already did the trick.
If anyone is looking to have music play at start up, I would recommend doing what I did- Install Buster OS and use omxplayer.
