If you install the full connect version, then switch to labwc in raspi-config on e.g. a Pi3, then it works fine connect desktop.AIUI, that is still true for screen sharing. However, the restriction has been lifted for command line access using RPi Connect Lite, which now works with any model of Pi. Bookworm (or later) is required, but not Wayland. See here. For desktop sharing, older Pi's are not supported.
From the announcement (emphasis mine):For older Pi's I prefer the open source DWService.First of all, Raspberry Pi Connect needs your Raspberry Pi to be running a 64-bit distribution of Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm that uses the Wayland window server. This in turn means that, for now, you’ll need a Raspberry Pi 5, Raspberry Pi 4, or Raspberry Pi 400.

This works from a new install.
Or you may need to update everything and install labwc too.
