Looking to install on a Raspberry Pi 4. I do have administrative permission on the computer I'm using, no messages have come up saying I need to use them. I don't think it is the image I'm using, I've tried the automatic Ubuntu selection through Pi Imager and downloaded an image to try to install from. Pi Imager will get so far into the write process (the highest I've seen is 28%) and then the error will occur. That's why I want to try to install it manually, to see if just getting the files on the card will allow me to go around using an imager.Raspberry Pi imager keeps giving me the message "Error writing file to disk" while trying to install Ubuntu. How do I install it manually to a micro SD card so that I can use it?
Is your target RPi board an RPi4, 400 or RPi[5]?
If so, you could try Install over the network - https://www.raspberrypi.com/documentati ... he-network (Although this still starts up a version of RPi Imager, so may not be much of an improvement.)
Other than the ability to easily find compatible Operating System images, and to apply pre-boot configuration for RasPiOS installations, there is nothing special about using RPi Imager.
There are many alternatives, such as Balena Etcher, or dd.
But my hunch is that whatever condition prevents the image being written to disk will impede your progress no matter what software you use.
What is the nature of the 'Workstation' machine you are using to prepare the microSD card? Does it have administrative controls over the use of external ports and devices? Is the microSD card 'slot' compatible with the size/standard of microSD card you are using?
Do you see the same issue if - for diagnostic/troubleshooting purpose - you try to install a recommended and supported image of RasPiOS?
On the off-chance that there is a problem with the image of the 3rd-party OS you are trying to install then https://ubuntuforums.org/ and https://askubuntu.com/ might be good places to ask.
