I believe some timings have been adjusted so that both memory sizes are very similar now.The performance loss between the 4GB and 8GB models was 57 percent when over clocked to 2800 MHz running stress-ng.The other issue is one of RAM performance on the BCM2712-based systems. There does appear to be a small difference in RAM performance in favour of the 4GB Pi 5 boards at the moment, so scaling up to 16GB could perhaps show a greater drop off in performance relative to the already marginally slower 8GB boards.

This may have changed since firmware updates but I haven't seen anyone rerun the test.
