It appears to work in a similar way to Connect (different technology, but some parallels). There’s a provided public service where the engagement happens - only if the machines can’t talk to each other directly does the data also get relayed there.
It would certainly do what I need. Now, if I can just decide to trust it. That decision was easier with Raspberey Pi Connect.
