This is most likely the issue. If you try the 24.04.1 desktop image listed in rpi-imager (under Other general-purpose OS / Ubuntu), you should find that graphical acceleration under Firefox operates correctly (at least, it's happy playing full-screen Youtube videos smoothly on my 4GB Pi 5 here). This is because, contrary to kerry_s' assertions (I'm well aware my job is an absolute joke as far as they're concerned), we do put a lot of effort into customizing the Ubuntu images for the Pi, including hardware acceleration. Though I do acknowledge Gnome is unlikely to ever rival LXDE for speed (actually it's not so much Gnome vs LXDE as it is the wayland compositors selected under them, but that's a whole other can of worms).I downloaded the ISO file from the ubuntu website (and burnt it with the rpi-imager using the "custom" option).
My guess is you're currently running an image that wasn't customized for the Pi 5 specifically. Possibly one of our generic arm64 images, though I rather doubt that as I don't think the Pi's bootloader would find the kernel/initrd. More likely one of the pi images, but pre-noble like jammy (22.04) which is somehow limping along even though it won't have the correct device-tree / kernel drivers / etc.
Out of pure interest for myself, can you recall which image you downloaded?
