I've been interested in RaspbeeryPi for a while more as a hobby not business related and am prepared to experiment and sometimes get things wrong and hopefully learn. and this forum has been a source of excellent information.

In November 2022 i signed up for the Magpi monthly magazine and (some months are not to my taste but...) mostly enjoy the read.

Within the 2024 Handbook, there is one project that I thought I would start which is the subject of this post.

Reviewing the parts needed i noted some were only available from the USA and the shipping costs are high at present so decided to go along with some initial purchases to try out the system.

It's been a few weeks now since i started to assemble what i had and try it out, there are some issues with the system software but i thought that was down to me and my inexperience, finally gave up and looked for a forum for guidance.

Got a good link from another contact to the GitHub support forum which is at :-

https://github.com/mcguirepr89/BirdNET-Pi/discussions.

To my surprise and total dissatisfaction, i am now reading that this project is effectively DEAD as ongoing support is not as available as it was, so people have lost or are losing interest, and although the issues i have may not require a software designer to respond if the site, in general, is not being visited then people like me will not get the help they need.

My real issue here is with the management of MagPi magazine, which included this article in the 2024 Handbook (originally in edition 119 i believe in 2022).

Shouldn't you due a certain amount of due diligence on the viability of support for these projects, if you had bothered to visit the GitHub site as above in the summer of 2023 and looked you would have found the beginnings of issues on the horizon for the continued support of this project and maybe just maybe you would have decided NOT to include it in the handbook.

Obviously, i am not asking you to be responsible for ongoing support for these projects, but there must be a decision-making process within your organization that should include the immediate/short-term viability of support.

And one other point on this project, the cost of the parts including shipping was/is not cheap and that should have also played a part in your decision to include it within the 2024 edition.

Not a great experience with Magpi i am afraid
