Would plugging the microSD card (containing the Raspberry Pi OS) into the front of the Pi 5 solve your problem ?
I bought an IOGEAR 'SuperSpeed USB 3.0 SD / MicroSD Card Reader / Writer' (Model GFR304SD), plugged the microSD card (containing Raspberry Pi OS) into the adapter, and then plugged that into the upper USB 3 Connector on the front of the Raspberry Pi 5.
It boots-up with no problem.
