I installed MATE. Can you tell me how to make it boot up in MATE?Correctly installed it should be integrated with your file manager (similar to File Explorer in Windows), such that when you double left mouse click on the zipped file icon it will open, or if you right mouse button click on it you should get a context menu popping up that allows you to open/extract/etc.
I use MATE (different window manager) with a different file manager so can't give you the exact install steps but expect that just installing it will give you the expected integration.
The "it started talking" issue, was that one of the updates ended up turning on Orca which is a voice aid for vision impaired folks. Easy solution for that is "sudo apt remove orca", since most folks don't want/need the functionality and you can inadvertently enable it.
