I'm not interested in using a bigger cooler, but to have the Pi5 consuming less amount energy than the usual ~1.5W to 2W it is said to consume. Heat dissipation is just the way to measure power consumption, for those who don't own a proper meter. For example you can feel that a cellphone remains cool when idling or even under light load (scrolling etc) but it gets hot when gaming. On the contrary the Pi5 is always burning hot (without cooling).
In addition to my initial post, I also
* removed (rmmod) various kernel modules to completely disable devices, like wifi and bluetooth
* unplugged HDMI and rebooted
* Tried turning off some PCI devices that powertop was reporting as 100% active, until the board froze Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
In the end I stay logged in with SSH via LAN and check that the CPU is idling at the down-clocked frequency of 500MHz and does almost nothing. Alternatively I leave it idling for hours without any ssh connection active.
The board still feels hot to the touch for long, the chipset feeling burning hot, so I'm assuming not much changed.
I'm wondering if the BCM2712 supports deep sleep states in the CPU, and how we can query the current state. I can't find any documentation on that.
Thank you all!
