Thank you for the replies. I will look closer at some circuit boards to find out what chips they use.
I bought the $8 rechargeable torch because I need a torch that size for a while. May open up the torch after I finish using it.
I have some nimh sets. 4 * AA rechargeable with charger. Currently about $22 locally for 2200 or 2400mah. I think they produce 1.2 volts. 4 * 1.2 is 4.8 volts. I have to test them as they fail if stored without regular top up charges.
I like the idea of buying locally as everything has to comply with some safety standards. Unfortunately local sources have lipo batteries, not lithium iron.
I looked online for those little power banks. I found heaps of cheap cases without batteries but no details about over current or discharge protection.
From what I read, you cannot use a lipo circuit for lithium iron.
Our local hardware shops have 18 volt 2.4 ah with both the charger and the battery at $70. One of the shops has just announced the same charger and battery pack for $25.
I might buy one of them. That will need a circuit to convert to USB 3.1 3 amp ready for use with other models like Pi 4 and 5.
