I was referring to the below, but it says five devices, not the six I thought it said. Whether a modified RP500 counts as a home built device is of course subject to debate, but the FCC has accepted ham radio operators making or modifying add-on boards to put inside their friend's equipment ever since Part 15 was introduced so that both ends are compatible, for example the moon-bounce communication guys who were borrowing Reed-Solomon error-correction ICs from other applications.

But yes if it causes interference you must stop, and I suspect this is why the RP500 doesn't have an M.2 slot. RPL really need to make a statement on this.

§ 15.23 Home-built devices.

(a) Equipment authorization is not required for devices that are not marketed, are not constructed from a kit, and are built in quantities of five or less for personal use.
Personal use does not allowing giving them to other people, you can only use them yourself.
That is not the interpretation given by an FCC representative when asked in 1996. He stated members of the same club of radio hams counted as acceptable personal use, and that has been accepted practice ever since.

But that is totally different to what is being discussed here.
